Lesson 3

Fonts

What? Did I hear someone say "I don't like that ugly font!
How do I change it?"
Oh my did I hear someone say "What's a font?"
Well a font is the style of your text.
As you can imagine there are thousands of font styles. Not every computer has the same fonts installed on it. For the most part you can only see a designated font on a webpage if you have that font installed on your machine. So it is important to take that into consideration when you design your page. After all you do not want your viewer to be fontless and have to view your page with some UGLY standard font....thus making a mess of your carefully planned design.

You can avoid this problem by doing one of the following.
Make the font you are using available to your viewer so it can be downloaded and installed on their computer or make sure you use a standard font that comes installed with windows. Microsoft Fonts

You have a number of fonts that come installed on your system. If you have a graphics program you have probably had more added automatically with the installation of those programs.
You may want to search the net and find more yourself.
Here are 2 links that have free font galleries:

1001 Free Fonts....just about the best font gallery on the net.
Font Freek....more good fonts but the site is not as well set up in my opinion.

For very detailed instructions on how to install new fonts on your machine go to the:
Font Gallery on my site. Not only will you find instructions you will find some of my favorite fonts available for download.

The next step of course is to select a font for your document. Now that you might have well over 300 fonts installed on your machine how can you tell what they look like? You can go to the font folder in windows and click on a font and it will pop up a window showing that font. But this is a long slow process so you might want to pick up a free little font viewer called: The Font Thing. download
